Temporary Disabilities

While studying at Northern College, a student may experience a temporary disability

Northern College Accessibility Services provides accommodations to students with disabilities that are either permanent, prolonged, or temporary.

Regardless of a student’s disability status, they must register with Accessibility Services and provide proper medical documentation to support the development of an Accommodation Letter.

A temporary disability (unlike a permanent disability such as diagnosed learning/developmental disabilities, blindness, deafness, chronic medical conditions, etc.) is a new condition with acute symptoms that a student can expect to fully recover from.

Examples of temporary disabilities include:

  • Sprains, strains or fractures
  • Concussions
  • Impairments in physical or psychological health following motor vehicle accidents
  • Newly diagnosed mental health conditions for which treatment and evaluation is ongoing
  • Return to studies following surgery
  • Undiagnosed disabilities for which a student is actively pursuing assessment and evaluation by a regulated healthcare practitioner
  • One or more of the conditions mentioned above that accompanies another permanent, diagnosed disability

Please note that common illnesses, such as the cold and flu, are not considered a temporary disability that would warrant accommodations through Accessibility Services unless the illness leads to an exacerbation of existing conditions or result in new diagnoses that do would fall under the temporary disability category.

If you have a temporary disability (or are unsure whether your condition would qualify as a temporary disability) and need support for your studies, please contact Accessibility Services to get started.

You will first meet with an Accessibility Advisor to discuss your need for accommodation. If you qualify, you will then be asked to provide supporting medical documentation to support the development of an Accommodation Plan.
