Northern Further Develops International Relationships

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College hosted a delegation of 12 people from the Chumbivilcas Cusco Region of Peru last week at the Timmins Campus. The delegation, comprised of two officials of Hudbay Minerals and 10 community leaders, visited the college to further the development of their relationship that will see Northern College providing mining training to residents of the area where Hudbay operates its 80,000 tonnes per day Constancia copper mine.

“We are committed to providing them with a model of best practices that is geared toward supporting economic development and governance in their area,” said Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “We continue to develop and offer customized training programs that are well received by industries around the world.”

This was the third group of Peruvian delegates to visit the college. Earlier visits included students and officials from college institutes that Northern has signed MOUs with as well as municipal politicians and business owners.

While in Timmins, the group also toured Goldcorp properties that have received awards for their environmental reclamation efforts.

“The tour of sites like Northern College and the reclamation site at Goldcorp allows the delegates to see first-hand how a community and the mining industry coexist and all the opportunities that come with it,” says Gibbons.
