GSE: 10-34 / IELTS: Below 5.0
1-semester ESL program + 1-year GAS EAP program (semesters 1 and 2) + college program of choice. Non-SDS Students who score between a 31 and 34 on the GSE will have option for an interview to determine if they can bypass ESL.

GSE: 35-44 / IELTS: 5.0
1-year GAS EAP program (semesters 1 and 2) + college program of choice. Non-SDS Students who score between a 41 and 44 on the GSE will have option for an interview to determine if they can bypass the first semester of EAP.

GSE: 45-54 / IELTS: 5.5
Second semester of the GAS EAP Program only + college program of choice. Non-SDS Students who score between a 51 and 54 on the GSE will have option for an interview to determine if they can bypass both ESL and EAP. Students of this level may enter directly into the second semester of GAS EAP (PCG292).

GSE: 55-64 / IELTS: 6.0
College program of choice + Mandatory Enhanced Communications I and II (CM1933 and CM2933). Non-SDS Students who score between a 51 and 54 on the GSE will have option for an interview to determine if they can bypass both ESL and EAP

GAS EAP (PCG291) Semester 1

Enhanced Communications I is a practical class designed to help non-native English speakers improve their English skills so that they can successfully complete their college program of choice. Through formal lessons and interactive activities, students acquire new vocabulary and apply various grammar concepts. Topics covered in this class include, but are not limited to, sentence types/structures, parts of speech, punctuation, verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement.

Students who require additional help in English will take Enhanced Communications I (CM1933) and Communications I (CM1903) simultaneously.

Students need to obtain a final grade of at least 60% in Communications I (CM1903) and 70% in Enhanced Communications I (C1933) to move on to Communications II (CM2903) and Enhanced Communications II (CM2933). If a student fails CM1933 and/or CM1903, they will not receive credit for either class.

Enhanced Communications II is a practical class designed to help non-native English speakers improve their English skills so that they can successfully complete their college program of choice. Through formal lessons and interactive activities, students acquire new vocabulary and apply various grammar concepts. Topics covered in this class include, but are not limited to, word choice, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, formal/informal style of writing, and figurative language.

Students who require additional help in English will take Enhanced Communications II and Communications II simultaneously.

Students need to obtain a final grade of at least 60% in Communications II (CM2903) and 70% in Enhanced Communications II (C2933) to obtain credits for both classes. If a student fails CM2933 and/or CM2903, they will not receive credit for either class.

In this course, students will gain practical experience with the essential features of Microsoft Office – MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint to enhance their communication and analytical skills. Basic computer skills are required as prerequisite. Students will gain hands-on experience with file management, software settings, system security, Word Reports (APA Functions), tables, advanced presentation functions, summarizing and analyzing data in Excel through a series of learning activities, projects, and exercises that focus on real world examples. Students gain practical knowledge that can be applied directly to the workplace setting.

42 Hours

Students continue to build their listening and speaking skills. Through teacher instructions and small group listening and speaking activities, students continue to develop listening strategies and the ability to speak about familiar topics in a variety of situations.

Students improve their reading comprehension skills and continue to develop reading strategies. Students read a variety of short texts and continue to build vocabulary.

Students continue to develop grammar and sentence structure skills. They write coherent and organized paragraphs, using a combination of simple, compound and complex sentences.

This class provides an introductory overview of Canada’s land, people, history, and government. Through various formal lessons and in-class activities, students learn fundamentals facts about Canada. Students enforce their knowledge by completing take-home assignments; they also conduct an oral presentation on indigenous culture. The topics covered in this class are the following: Canada’s provinces and territories, Canada’s weather, travelling in Canada, Canada’s soil and rock, Canada’s water, Canadian forests, Canada’s regions, Canada’s population, ages of Canadians, Canada’s official languages, Immigrants in Canada, Canadians and job industries, unemployment in Canada, the history of indigenous Canadians, Canada and the world wars, the Constitution Act, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadian holidays, Canada’s levels of government, voting in Canada, the federal government, provincial governments and municipal governments.

42 Hours

Students continue to develop and integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. English for routine everyday social contexts in Canadian life is taught and practiced. Through in-class and online study, students improve their overall English skills to enhance general communication.
