The Department of Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (AREI) hosts the Innovation Hub to conduct innovative product, process, and service prototyping and testing that enhances industry competitiveness and boosts regional economic development while serving as an experiential learning and resource hub for our students and the broader community.

Our Expertise

AREI can connect you with any of the knowledgeable faculty at Northern College who may be relevant to assist you in solving a problem. In addition, we host in-house expertise on topics including:

  • Additive manufacturing, design prototyping, and reverse engineering, based in one of the best-equipped 3D printing facilities at any college in Ontario (range of plastic and stainless steel).
  • Alternative energy and battery storage, including solar, wind and hydroelectric power generation.
  • Mineral processing and mine tailings management and remediation.
  • Wastewater management and water treatment, for developing solutions for water quality/effluent management.

What We DoWho We Are

Innovation Hub

Our facilities include:

  • 3D Printing Lab with ability to print in nylon, resin, carbon fibre reinforced plastic, and even stainless steel.
  • Manufacturing Lab with CNC lathes, CNC mills (5-axis and 3-axis), waterjet cutter, and laser cutter.
  • Machine Shop with machine lathes, vertical and horizontal band saws, and a plasma table.
