Automotive Service Technician is a compulsory certified trade regulated by the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act.

A person working in this trade must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or be registered as an apprentice. Upon successfully completing the apprenticeship program and passing a trade examination, a person working in this trade is entitled to a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification.

Northern College offers the three levels of theoretical training required for the Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship. Training is delivered in day release format, that is, 1 day per week for 40 weeks.

In-school training includes instruction in:

  • Work Practices
  • Engine Systems
  • Electrical/Electronic & Emission Systems
  • Drive Train Systems
  • Suspension/Steering and Brake Systems
  • Air Conditioning Systems

Grade 12 or equivalent

Applicants for this training must be registered apprentices in the Automotive Service Technician Trade In-school training includes instruction in:

Our hands-on apprenticeship training is designed and supported by industry to meet the needs of new and emerging trades and occupations.

Red Seal Preparation: Industrial Millwright Mechanic, Automotive Service Technician, and Construction & Maintenance Electrician courses cover preparation on how to write an exam and materials relevant to the trade exam.

Upon successful completion of the trade requirements, apprentices earn a Certificate of Apprenticeship or a Certificate of Qualification (“ticket”) that allows them to work on their own at a higher rate of pay.
